1. The short version

Your files, command-line arguments, document contents, environment variables, and macOS username stay on your Mac. When you request an AI explanation, MacStats sends the selected process name and limited diagnostic context needed to explain the issue.

2. The AI Explainer Feature

Depending on the explanation requested, this context may include the process name, CPU and memory usage, process uptime, Mac model, macOS and app version, thermal and memory state, battery health, disk usage, network throughput, recent aggregate CPU averages, and the names and coarse usage of a small number of top processes.

We do not send file paths, command-line arguments, document contents, environment variables, your macOS username, or Bluetooth device names. Diagnostic requests are processed by the MacStats API and its configured AI provider.

3. Analytics and Telemetry

We collect basic, anonymized telemetry to understand how the app is performing. This includes:

App launches and crashes
macOS version (to ensure compatibility)
Device model (e.g., "MacBook Pro M2")

We do not store raw IP addresses or derive your location. The backend immediately converts an IP address into a one-way, salted hash used for abuse prevention and aggregate analytics.

4. Payment Information

When you purchase a Pro license, your payment is processed securely by Paddle. MacStats never sees or stores your credit card information. We store the license, purchase email, Paddle transaction/customer identifiers, order totals and currency, and refund or chargeback status so we can fulfill purchases, provide support, prevent duplicate fulfillment, and enforce license status.

5. Website Analytics

We use Google Analytics (GA4) on our website (macstats.app) to understand traffic patterns and measure the effectiveness of our marketing. Google Analytics may set cookies on your browser. Important: Google Analytics is ONLY used on our website. It is NOT integrated into the MacStats macOS application.
